A weekend getaway from Atlanta to the Cumberland Plateau is approximately 2.5 hours. That puts it squarely in “worth it” territory. Far enough to feel like a genuine change of scenery, close enough to do on a Friday afternoon without losing half your weekend to the drive. And Atlanta runs on Eastern time, which means you gain an hour when you cross into Tennessee. Leave at 5, arrive at 6:30.

The route takes you north on I-75 through Chattanooga, then up I-24 as the highway climbs Monteagle Mountain onto the plateau. That climb is the moment the trip changes. The trees close in, the elevation rises, and by the time you reach the top you’re somewhere that feels genuinely different from anything in Georgia.

Where You’ll Be Staying

The Getaway on Ranger Creek sits on 18 acres in Coalmont, Tennessee: a creek, a pond, and 18 acres of plateau woodland. Five units: the Geodesic Glamping Dome, the Scandinavian Cabin, the Glamping Tent with Deck, the Porch House Cabin, and the Nordic Spruce Cabin. Real beds, fire pits, and hot showers. A setup that makes a weekend feel like an actual break.

The dome has a large picture window looking out over the pond, with the tree line along the far bank. The Scandinavian Cabin was renovated in 2026 with new mini-split climate control. The glamping tent has a full deck and sits in the trees. Each unit has its own character, but they share the same thing: quiet, space, and a piece of Tennessee that most Atlanta weekenders haven’t found yet.

What to Do from Here

The South Cumberland State Park system covers 11 natural areas and more than 125 miles of trail. Greeter Falls is 12 minutes from the property: two connected waterfalls through old-growth forest with a swimming hole at the end. Foster Falls is 28 minutes in the other direction: a 60-foot waterfall with a suspension bridge and rock climbing walls below. The Fiery Gizzard Trail, rated one of the top 25 hikes in the country by Backpacker magazine, starts at Grundy Forest 22 minutes away. Our FAQ has the full list of nearby trails and attractions with drive times from the property.

For something with more of a destination feel, Chattanooga is an hour south: Tennessee Aquarium, Lookout Mountain, Rock City, Ruby Falls, and a walkable riverfront. You’ll pass through it on the way up anyway.

The Caverns

Approximately 30 minutes from the property is The Caverns, a concert venue built inside a working cave. Named Theater of the Year at the 2026 ACM Awards, it runs shows year-round across every genre imaginable. The cave stays 59 degrees regardless of what the Tennessee summer is doing outside. If there’s a show on during your weekend, it’s worth planning around. Check the current schedule at thecaverns.com.

Making the Weekend Getaway from Atlanta Work

Leave Atlanta Friday afternoon and gain an hour the moment you cross into Tennessee. Take I-75 north to I-24, follow I-24 up the mountain, and you’re at the property in time for dinner. Two full days on the plateau Saturday and Sunday. Sunday morning, take your time: coffee and breakfast on your private deck before you check out. From there, a short hike on the way home makes the drive feel earned rather than just necessary. Back in Atlanta Sunday evening, with the week ahead feeling a little more manageable.
