Sewanee Tennessee sits on top of the Cumberland Plateau, about 36 minutes from The Getaway on Ranger Creek, and most people who visit once find a reason to go back. The University of the South has been here since 1858, and its 13,000-acre campus, known as the Domain, is open to visitors for hiking, exploring, and generally wandering around one of the more unusual places in Tennessee.
It’s a busy half-day at minimum. Probably a full day if you let it be.
The Architecture
Start on campus. The University of the South is built in collegiate Gothic style, almost entirely from locally quarried Sewanee sandstone. All Saints’ Chapel is the centerpiece: a proper stone cathedral on top of a mountain, the kind of building that stops you mid-step. The campus has been compared to Oxford, and while that’s a big claim, the scale and the craftsmanship back it up. Give yourself time to walk the main quad and look up.
The Overlooks
The Domain’s trail system covers 65 miles of hiking, but you don’t need to commit to a long hike to get the views. Several of the best overlooks are accessible from short walks off the main roads.
Green’s View is a favorite. Park on Green’s View Road, walk a short distance, and you’re looking out over a wide valley with the plateau edge dropping away below you. Morgan’s Steep offers a similar payoff from the Lake Cheston trailhead, about three quarters of a mile each way. The War Memorial Cross, known locally as just “The Cross,” sits at a bluff edge looking southwest over Hawkins Cove. All three are worth the short effort.
For those who want more trail, the Perimeter Trail is a 20-mile loop around the Domain with consistent bluff views, mature hardwood forest, and access to Bridal Veil Falls, the most visited waterfall on the mountain. Most day visitors pick a section rather than the full loop. For more serious hiking within a short drive of Sewanee, the South Cumberland State Park system offers 125+ miles of trail across the plateau.
The Village and Where to Eat
Sewanee Village is a compact stretch of locally owned shops and restaurants along University Avenue. The food situation here is better than most visitors expect.
LUNCH is the standout. A Michelin Bib Gourmand-rated restaurant in a mountain town of around 2,300 people is not something you see often, and it earns the recognition. The menu rotates and the focus is on quality ingredients done simply. It serves lunch only, so plan around it. Stirling’s Coffee House is the place to start the morning: a yellow historic house with a porch that feels more like a friend’s home than a cafe. The Blue Chair has deli dining and a pub next door. The Sewanee Inn does breakfast and dinner with a menu that takes its time.
Woody’s Bicycle Shop rents bikes if you want to explore the trails on two wheels. It’s a small town, intentionally. The whole visit tends to move at a slower pace than most day trips, which is part of what makes it worth doing.
If You’re Coming for Graduation
The University of the South’s Commencement runs May 7-10, 2026. Baccalaureate is Saturday May 9, and the main ceremony is Sunday May 10. Families travel from across the country for the weekend, and lodging in Monteagle, the closest town, books up quickly. Sometimes completely.
The Getaway on Ranger Creek is 36 minutes from campus and has hosted graduation families before. Five units available: the Geodesic Glamping Dome, the Scandinavian Cabin, the Glamping Tent with Deck, the Porch House Cabin, and the Nordic Spruce Cabin. If you’re planning to be in Sewanee for graduation weekend, booking early is not an overstatement.
